Report finds Irish red squirrel under threat
Oct 9, 2007, 16:38 GMT
Dublin - A survey of the Irish red squirrel population to be published in Dublin Tuesday has shown that the animal is under threat from a virus carried by the non-native grey squirrel, national broadcaster RTE reported.
The report is to recommend that Ireland protect its native red squirrel population and take measures to control grey squirrel numbers.
Since 1997, the grey squirrel has spread to every part of the Irish republic, extending to the west of the country where it was previously unknown.
The report found that the red squirrel has now disappeared from at least four Irish counties.
The report also said that the grey squirrel is a threat to Irish forests.
