Danish government to force citizens to fight snail plague
Aug 9, 2007, 13:18 GMT
Copenhagen - The Danish government was planning to introduce a legal obligation for all citizens to fight a massive snail plague inflicting the country, reports said Thursday.
Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard said Thursday in the Berlingske Tidende newspaper that this would be a good plan to halt the spread of the Iberian snails, known as killer snails in Denmark.
The slimy red snails are gobbling up greenery all over Denmark and are the scourge of both hobby and professional gardeners.
The environment minister from the Danish Conservative Party has suggested that the unemployed could be used as a 'fifth column' for the mass killing of snails.
Experts have said that there is no known proven means of reducing the snail plague.
