Orangutan found with 62 bullets in body near Indonesian park

Jakarta - Animal conservationists were treating an orangutan found near a national park on Indonesia's Sumatra Island with 62 bullets from an air rifle lodged in its body, a local report said Monday. The sick animal was taken from unidentified individuals following a tip-off from residents who had seen it captured in a village 40 kilometres outside the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park near Jambi, about 500 kilometres north-west of the capital Jakarta, The Jakarta Post reported. 'We found the animal in appalling condition,' Erni Suyanti, a consultant for the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program, was quoted as saying by the state-run Antara news agency. The program oversees the reintroduction of domesticated orangutans into a protected jungle that runs through Jambi and Riau provinces. Suyanti said the male orangutan had bullets in its skull and lungs and had also been blinded. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
