RE:'The compensation would have to be at least as lucrative as granting licenses to deforest, said environmental economist Fitrian Ardiansyah. The problem is that while the central government in Jakarta has passed a number of laws to protect the forest, local officials can be bribed to ignore them.'
Money makes the world go around, the world go around, WORLD go around!
We would fork over the money to save the trees. Local politicians would pocket the money, and then turn right around and let the forests be cut anyway. EVERYTHING is for sale in Indonesia. Keep your daughters and sisters out of that god-forsaken place. The locals will sell them faster than the would the trees, the coral, or anything else there.
I know Indonesia very well, indeed everything is for sale vut only to the big companies and to the cronies of the regime .Local farmers are evicted in Kalimantan too and forrest disappear at such a fast rate that in 15 years the jungle might just completely vanish from a once lush tropical paradise .Again corporate business is responsible for that .Local farmers are just dispossesed of their traditional small farms and if they dare protest their fate is quickly sealed .Indonersia is very hypocritical at hosting the Bali conference and destroying it's own natural resources .Not so many years agao an Airbus crashed in Sumatra because visibility was impaired by smoke from the burning forrest.Suharto has left but nothing much has changed .The same economical interest groups run the country .
' corporate business is responsible '
All of us are responsible . Corporate , Socialist , Communist , everyone .
Capitalists are far more responsible than Communists because Capitalists have laws to follow , Communists do as they please , they are not ruled by anything but themselves .
Capitalism is not the problem, Socialism and opportunistic Corporatism are.
Rid the world of the criminal evil of Socialism and the Corporations will likely no longer see profit in doing this damage.
