I agree thank god the sealers boat turned and they died . best news is ages. i hope when the boat capsized there skulls got smashed in but they didnt die instantly. dickheads. now hopefully the almighty will give other animals some luck , starting with canned hunting . hopefully lions will rip apart hunters.
How can you people be glad that the sealers died? What is more important the life of a seal or the life of a human? If you think they are equal in value you are crazy. Do you use any thing that comes from some thing that was once alive? Yes you do. If the life of a seal and the life of a human are equal what about other animals, plants, or any life form at all? Do you use antibacterial soaps? You are killing the poor bacteria, how dare you! You people are nuts. You all live comfortable lives with no real worry about survival so you start to make up worries. That is what is wrong with you people, you are all too comfortable in your lives.
as a seal hunter i would like to say sorry to hear about those sealers that lost their lives the other day, as for the idiots posting those comments praising their deaths,how could you say something like that? how would you like someone saying that about your family or friends, just goes too show that most of the protesters that the IFAW are conjuring up are far worst than any seal hunter by a long shot!
Defending the Sealers way of life is akin to defending the Ivory Poachers way of life, which nearly wiped all the elephants of the earth. Just because thats the life they chose doesnt mean it should be preserved. That way of life is bad and should be elliminated. There are many professions out there wher eyou can feed you children. I am sure all those ivory poachers also found an alternate way of life

But saying it isn't going to make it so. If you REALLY want to see change, get out there and do it yourselves, otherwise I don't think anyone has the right to complain. (Please don't point out the hypocrisy of that statement, I am fully aware of it)
Furthermore, I think it is absolutely disgusting that so many people have commented saying that they're glad that four people have died. That doesn't make any sense to me. You attach human attributes to other species, yet you completely ignore the pain of your own. Maybe those clubbers WERE bad people, maybe they weren't. Does it really matter? It's still sad that they died.
ALSO Being a Canadian, I really don't appreciate the generalizing that seems so popular in these comments. I don't club seals. I don't condone the clubbing of seals. Not all Canadians club seals. Stop blaming 'Canada' as a whole for seal clubbing. I'm pretty sure most of us don't even know it's happening (which isn't necessarily better, but the majority of the population DOES NOT club seals).

To the individual who made a comment about paying them to to stop clubbing. Last year a businesswoman did offer the government more htan $16 million, which is roughly what they make off this brutality, but was turned down. They cited tradition. So which is it? If you call them on their brutality, they claim they need the money. If you offer them money, they turn it down citing 'tradition'. One can only conclude that the bloodfest satisfies some primordial urge like drunken bacchanalian revelry. Unfortunately it's babies that suffer. And humans consider themselves superior? Time for humanity to take a good long look in the mirror, especially the idiots who wear fur thinking they look sexy. Do they realize they're equally guilty as the guy with the hook in his hands or the callous person in a fur farm skinning an animal alive?
this is sick, i hope these men die, no human that has feelings could do this to a poor helpless animal, they are cowards and evil and deserve to die a painful death!

I am a student doing research on this topic and i stumble upon this website to find.. people who are for it and against it.. really i am against the whole thing!! This horrible hunt that happens in canada is awful! i read the comment about the cow, pig, and whichever animals they posted and the thing with that is we eat, and use the entire animal.. nothing is thrown away!!! the fact that the seal is smacked over the head ans stunned, stripped of its fur while some are still alive is the most horrific thing a creature can go through!!! does anyone eat the meat???? i have heard the chinese eat the penis of the seal (gross!!) but what wont they eat??? If this hunt is going to happen at least do it humanely (put to sleep)! If i ever come into large amounts of money, i will stop the hunt!! and yes it is sad to say im glad that god punished the sealers for doing this awful deed!!!!!
What goes around, comes around. It's called Karma. I was very elated to hear about the boating accident with fatalities. I shall pray more will follow. I pray the earth will open up and swallow these seal hunters. Seal hunters are cruel idiots-so should their fate be by the act of Providence.
In response to the last comment: observers were allowed on the ice floes this year (2008). The permits were not issued until the last minute, but were issued. Just read the articles on the Coast Guard colliding with an observation boat.
In response to the person asking why the seal didn't run away when it saw the other seal clubbed: the baby seals being killed are only two weeks old and cannot run away or move around yet. They are defenseless and rely on their mothers to come to them to nurse and protect them.
And yes they do use boat hooks to stun or kill the baby seals. Watch some of the footage at the HSUS website and you will see the different ways they kill the seals.
Lets just hope this ends before anymore humans or innocent seals die.

How was this picture obtained? Considering only 5% are clubbed nowadays and the activists are having a hard time keeping up with the sealers, I doubt this picture was taken this year. Activists keep using pictures from the 60's to promote their twisted agendas, so that wouldn't surprise me. Seal pups have been off-limits to sealers since the 1980's so please stop saying pups are being killed.
To those of you saying these animals are treated/killed cruelly, well, I'll put it this way for you, they're free-range, sealers are now forced to ensure the animal is dead before skinning and the method of killing should not be mistaken for cruel (they club or shoot, the first kills instantly in 99% of cases, the second one was done to please activists and is more cruel than the first as some seals get shot, slide under the ice and die for nothing). Also, the entire animal is used for meat, oil and pelt.
I also would like to point out that cows, chickens, pigs, etc are killed every day and I don't hear your bleeding hearts for them... not cute enough for you? Hypocrites!

Anne S., I've never heard anyone so misinformed about the seal hunt! Where do you get your statistics? the 1960's? PETA? Ever heard of population growth statistics? Sealers aren't 'ravaging stocks', they can't even kill enough every year for the population to remain stable, it's balooning to the point where more and more seals are spotted dying of starvation on the shores of Atlantic Canada. And you Activists are just making a bad situation worse. Will you stop eating beef if I show you how it's killed? or Chicken? We don't 'put these animals to sleep', we kill them, usually after stunning them.
Some people in this so-called civilized world seem to forget their meat once lived and breathed... and had to be killed at some point in a way that's usually not so pleasant to watch. Next time you stop by a farm, ask teh farmer to show you how he kills his animals (or castrates them, just as disturbing).
I am a vegetarian, so I am not a hypocrite as you suggest. Approximately half of the baby seals are alive and conscious when they are skinned, according to veterinarians. Even the head of veterinary sciences in Canada confirmed that approximately 42% are skinned alive. Veterinary science condemns the seal slaughter. Religious leaders of all the major faiths around the world also condemn the seal slaughter. At least the four men who died simply drowned, a merciful death compared to what they planned to do to the seals! There is absolutely no excuse for kicking baby seals in the face and skinning them alive! Canadians are vicious cowards, too evil to listen to reason. They have no moral compass and no soul. The world needs to pressure Canada to stop this barbaric carnage once and for all. A number of European countries already ban seal products and the EU will soon vote on a complete ban.
I would like to add that I feel perfectly confident blaming all Canadians for the atrocity of the seal slaughter. I am a United States citizen. My country banned the importation of all Canadian seal products in the 1970s. If you are so high and mighty and actually oppose the seal slaughter, your government would also have banned the seal slaughter back in the 1970s. You are complicit with this evil, so you might as well be swinging the hakapik yourselves.
