Robert Downey Jr. goes black for his latest role

Actor Robert Downey Jr has a role in an upcoming Ben Stiller comedy that is raising eyebrows.

Downey is transformed into a black man by make-up and hair in the upcoming film, “Tropic Thunder.”

He plays Kirk Lazarus, a serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the costliest Vietnam War film ever.  The twist is Lazarus’s character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black.

Lazarus makes the decision to dye his skin and play Osiris.

Downey spoke to EW magazine regarding his role: ”If it’s done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago, if you don’t do it right, we’re going to hell.”

“Tropic Thunder’s” cast also includes Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte and cameos from Tom Cruise and Tobey Maguire.

Stiller told EW: “I had no idea how people would respond to it,” and at a recent screening, black viewers reportedly enjoyed the film.

Paramount is set to release the trailer for “Tropic Thunder” on March 17.
