Ricky Gervais and the Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais kept the jokes flowing as he hosted the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night.

The 2012 Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and aired live on NBC on Sunday 15th January.

British comedian Gervais opened the show by instantly cracking jokes that poked fun at the Globes themselves.

“The Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton, basically. Bit louder, bit trashier, bit drunker and more easily bought. Em allegedly. Nothing’s been proved.”

“Now the Hollywood Foreign Press have warned me that if I insult any of you, or any of them, or offend any viewers or cause any controversy whatsoever, they’ll definitely invite me back next year as well.”

“I’m not libel to anyone and I mustn’t mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films and especially not Jodie Foster’s Beaver. I haven’t seen it myself. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys here. They haven’t seen it either but that doesn’t mean it’s not any good.”

George Clooney won the award from ‘best performance by an actor in a motion picture – drama’ for the film The Descendants.
