Review: WE tv’s Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?

Joan and Melissa pull back the veil on their personal lives this season on Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? as they tackle complex issues like sexuality, infidelity, love, health and parenting.

The result is a rollicking fun, in-depth look at this multi-faceted mother-daughter pair.

Everyone knows that reality TV surrounding families is contrived and preplanned, it’s not like cameras show up and just film people eating Wheaties and compiling lists of "to-do’s."

There are scenarios that have to be conjured and guest stars to pepper episodes so that the glorified life is writ large and full of "I Love Lucy" harebrained moments. How this happens is what separates the sidesplitting "Osbournes" of this genre from the "Kardashian" claptrap.

Welcome to Joan Rivers world, where her daughter is her best friend and right hand, the two admirably working harder than any female duo in this town to create an empire of influence, wealth and currency amongst fellow celebs in their raucous "Fashion Police" series on E! and WEtv’s delightful slice of Malibu sturm und drang "Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best?" coming February 23 at 9 PM ET/PT on WEtv.

Give it up for Joan, who’s been wielding the comedy scalpel for 50 years. She’s 78 and sharp as a tack, earning and burning pretentious celebrities and taking the mickey out of Paris Hilton still with the flick of her tongue. She’s all heart though, witnesses by the addition to their season of actress and comic Lynne Koplitz, a great resource and missed by us fans of "Z Rock" on IFC.

Koplitz adds a nice touch in scene with Joan and Melissa as "Joanie" opens the series with her Lesbian flirtation. Lynne wonder why Joan never found her attractive as the closeness of Joan’s new friendship gets under Lynne’s skin a bit. On "Z Rock," Joan was featured as a guest star and the two apparently have bonded.

For the opener, Joan flirts with the notion she may be gay, but she’s as straight as Yoko Ono’s pubic hair. Joan is lonely for good company. She meets and bonds with Shirl, a leggy Lesbian of means who picks up the tab here and there, making Joan swoon a bit. A kiss confirms that Joan plays for the straight team, and her friend has nothing but platonic love for her.

Meanwhile Melissa shows how divorced people can be kind to each other, despite her tough breakup. Her son’s father is welcome in Joan and Melissa’s Malibu home. This is a huge lesson for people who split and share children, that being forgiving and working together keeps kids from a life of emotional pain.

This is pure popcorn TV, and for fans of Rivers, a delight. Anything Joanie does is alright by me.
WE tv’s Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?
