Life imitates cake, or cake imitates life? Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ rotten ancient piece of squirreled away Royal Wedding Cake slice has sold for $1,375.

A 33-year old royal wedding cake slice from Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding sold this evening for $1,375 through Nate D. Sanders Auctions.

The cake slice comes in the original white and silver presentation box dated Buckingham Palace 29 July 1981, with Prince of Wales’ feathers and ”CD” monogram. The cake slice came with a card stating: ”With best wishes from / Their Royal Highnesses / The Prince & Princess of Wales.’’ The whole slice is wrapped in original wax paper and doily.

In 2012, a 31-year-old piece of wedding cake preserved from Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s 1981 wedding was auctioned off in Beverly Hills by Julien’s Auctions with a fresher royal cake from Kate Middleton and Prince William’s 2011 wedding.
