PlayStation 3 leads software race for 2008

When it comes to home console software performance, few could argue against 2007 going into the history books as Microsoft’s year. However, with no Halo 4 or BioShock 2 to help further the Xbox 360’s impressive gaming run, the format playing field is once again wide open for all comers. But who will win out in 2008?

Well, according to a Top 25 games of 2008 list published this month by downloadable PDF magazine D+PAD, it would appear that the Xbox 360 is once again positioning itself for superiority regarding strength in numbers. However, placing quantity to one side, the PlayStation 3 looks to be securing expectations with a number of 2007 titles delayed into 2008, while the Wii will be popping up here and there with the odd gem or two.

Specifically, D+PAD’s (strictly objective) list reveals that Microsoft has six console exclusives of note within the year’s top 25 titles, while Sony has four and Nintendo has but three — the remaining twelve titles are multi-platform.

Yet, of Microsoft’s six games, only one, Alan Wake (7), is positioned in the top ten rankings, while all four of Sony’s make the grade, as do two of Nintendo’s.

Of those upper echelon entrants from Sony and Nintendo, Mario Kart Wii sits in tenth, while sci-fi shooter Killzone 2 (PS3) takes ninth position, and the long-awaited granddaddy of racing, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (PS3) occupies sixth.

Of those exclusives making up the top five, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) holds fourth spot, while LittleBigPlanet (PS3) and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) steal in for third and second respectively. Unsurprisingly, the title of most anticipated game of the year (still) belongs to Grand Theft Auto IV (360, PS3).

Here’s the Top 25 list in full… do you agree with D+PAD’s placement choices? Think Fable 2 and Halo Wars should be higher than the early 20s? Gobsmacked to see Resistance 2 only manage seventeenth? Drop a few comment bombs.
