Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit their namesake city

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opened a hospital in their namesake city today (28.11.12).

The royal couple arrived in Cambridge, for the first time since Queen Elizabeth bestowed them Dukedom on their wedding day last April, and took to the balcony of Cambridge's Guildhall to wave to the crowds below.

Prince William was given a warm welcome from the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Hugh Duberly, and his wife Sally.

Hugh said there was 'great excitement' in the city at the couple's presence.

He said: 'We're delighted that they are with us. They've come to claim the county they're named after.

'They have been very anxious to come. They have very a busy life with him having a full time job.'

William and Duchess Catherine, formally known as Kate Middleton before their nuptials, walked past hundreds of fans from the Guildhall to Cambridge University's Senate where the prince gave a speech.

The couple received a baby-grow with the words 'Daddy's little co-pilot' and a picture of a helicopter from new mother Samantha Hill, referring to William's RAF search and rescue pilot career.

She said: 'I made it for when his little one comes along, he's a helicopter pilot so his baby will think his daddy is cool.

'When I gave it to him he said, 'I'll keep that', and handed it to his aide.'

While at the university building the royals admitted they are fans of TV quiz 'University Challenge, telling one undergraduate student: 'I love watching 'University Challenge'.'

William added: 'I watched Trinity annihilate York. I could manage one question. The brain power in here is palpable. I'm finding it quite intimidating.'

This stop is part of the couple's festive duties, which are set to finish at the beginning of next month with the premiere of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' in London.
