Britain's Prince William and Duchess Catherine are to attend the Royal Film Performance of 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to the Odeon cinema in London's Leicester Square for the 65th Royal Film Performance on December 12, where they will be joined by several cast members from the fantasy film including Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Cate Blanchett.

William and Catherine will get the opportunity to meet stars of the film and beneficiaries of the charity Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) - which offers assistance to those in the industry affected by illness, bereavement, accident or unemployment, and is mainly funded by Royal Film Performance - prior to the screening.

Martin Freeman - who portrays lead character Bilbo Baggins in the motion picture - will also be in attendance alongside his co-stars Christopher Lee, James Nesbitt and director Sir Peter Jackson.

Last year's Royal Film Performance saw Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, attend a screening of Martin Scorsese's 3D historical adventure drama 'Hugo', while Queen Elizabeth took in 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader' in 2010.

It will not be the first time William and Catherine - who was known as Kate Middleton prior to the couple's nuptials - have attended a film screening together after they went to the London premiere of Disney film 'African Cats' in April and Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse' in January.
