Sarah Ferguson
Britain's Sarah Ferguson missed her daughter Princess Eugenie's graduation because she is recovering from an operation.
The Duchess of York did not join her ex-husband Prince Andrew to see the 22-year-old princess be presented with her 2:1 combined degree in English and History of Art at Newcastle University on Wednesday (11.07.12) because she is currently in Thailand recuperating after a bout of illness and a surgical procedure.
A spokesperson said: 'She had an operation a while ago and this was always planned as a period of recuperation.
'Of course, she is disappointed to miss her daughter's graduation.'
It was not clear what exactly the operation was, although sources said the duchess had shown no sign of being unwell in the past few months.
Upon learning she had gained a 2:1 degree, Eugenie praised the university she studied at for helping her have an 'incredible' time.
She said in a statement: 'Newcastle University has given me such an incredible three years. I have had a wonderful time in the north east, learning and having a fantastic experience.
'The staff and tutors at Newcastle have guided me through my years there and given me great support. I am so lucky to have spent time there.'
