A piece of toast left over by Britain's Prince Charles on his wedding day to Princess Diana in 1981 is to be auctioned.

Rosemarie Smith, who was visiting the palace - where her daughter was a maid - at the time of the wedding, claims to have taken the leftover slice and kept it in a Royal Crown Derby cup at her home ever since.

She told the BBC: 'At the time my daughter was a maid at the palace and one of her duties was to collect Prince Charles's breakfast tray from outside his room.

'I was with her in the corridor and saw Prince Charles had left some toast on the tray. I had been thinking about a keepsake from the wedding and saw the toast and thought to myself: 'Why not'?

'We hadn't talked about it much down the years but Prince William and Duchess Catherine's wedding last year and then Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee has made the royals more popular than ever. That got me thinking that my toast could be worth a bit of money.'

Auctioneers Hansons have predicted the slice could make up to £500 when it is auctioned on July 19.
