Prince Albert, Charlene marry in religious ceremony

Jul 2, 2011, 20:38 GMT

Monaco - Monaco's Prince Albert II and his South African princess Charlene Wittstock were married in a religious ceremony Saturday at the princely palace in Monaco in the presence of thousands of guests.

Albert, 53, and his wife, who is 20 years his junior, have officially been married since Friday, when they exchanged vows in a smaller civil ceremony. Saturday's religious wedding marks the high point of two days of festivities.

The courtyard of the 13th century palace was transformed into an open-air cathedral for the nuptials, which was attended by several heads of state, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Swedish King Carl Gustav.

The princess, wearing a off-the-shoulder white silk dress with a five-metre train designed by Giorgio Armani, was cheered and applauded as she walked down the red carpet serving as an aisle on the arm of her father Michael.

The prince was the first to answer 'Yes' when asked by the Archbishop of Monaco, Bernard Barsi, if he took the former swimming champion as his wife.

The princess then also replied 'Yes.'
