Queen Beatrix to auction thousands of family heirlooms
Dec 1, 2010, 13:15 GMT
Amsterdam - Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and her three sisters are set to auction off thousands of family pieces left to them by their mother, Queen Juliana, who died in 2004, it was announced Wednesday.
The items on sale will include 'paintings, glassware and furniture from the Juliana palace in Soestdijk,' a government spokesman said.
According to the daily De Telegraaf, the queen and her sisters agreed the sale 'to free up more space for the family archives.'
The Sotheby's auction will take place over four days in March next year, and, according to experts, is expected to raise up to 3 million euros. The money will go to charity, De Telegraaf reported.
The Soestdijk, in Amsterdam, is one of the four official palaces of the Dutch royal family.
