Prince Charles climate advice
May 27, 2010, 12:02 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles will urge world leaders to tackle the destruction of the planet's rainforests.
The heir to the throne - who is set to speak at the Oslo Climate and Forest Conference later today (27.05.10) - hopes to persuade world leaders to contribute to a new £1 billion deal for the Prince's Rainforest project which plans to reduce deforestation by 25 per cent by 2015.
As part of the scheme, Indonesia, the country with the highest rate of deforestation, is thought to be signing an agreement under which it will stop issuing new licenses for forest clearance.
In return, Norway will give the country $1 billion.
It is hoped the conference will mark a strong start to the implementation of The Prince's Rainforests Project, which published a plan last November for a _25 billion fund to decrease deforestation.
The 30 countries represented at the event include the Norwegian Prime Minister, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, the President Sassau-Nguesso of Congo and Norway's Crown Princess.
