Queen Elizabeth opens Parliament
May 26, 2010, 12:03 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth opened Parliament for the new coalition government yesterday (25.05.10).
The monarch - who journeyed in the Irish State Coach from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh - presided over an historic day when she opened Parliament for David Cameron and Nick Clegg's new Conservative-Liberal Democrat government.
On arrival, the 84-year-old monarch donned the Imperial State Crown and parliamentary robe, before leading the customary procession to the House of Lords where she took to the throne, and summoned members of the House of Commons.
Although this is the 56th time the queen has opened a new parliamentary session during her reign, it was the first she has done for a coalition government.
She then delivered her speech which outlines the new government's plans for the next year and a half.
The ceremony ended with the queen and Prince Philip returning to Buckingham Palace in the royal carriage, with the Coldstream Guards playing the national anthem.
