King Abdullah's work praised
May 26, 2010, 12:03 GMT
Jordan's King Abdullah and Queen Rania celebrated Independence Day yesterday (25.05.10).
The royal couple - who attended a speech by Prime Minister Samir Rifai along with foreign ambassadors, and military and security officers - were praised by the country's leader for the work they'd done in enhancing freedom and democracy in the kingdom.
Rifai highlighted the king's efforts to support the rights of citizens and their right to free elections, as well as claiming King Abdullah's efforts to bring about peace had "broken the silence of the international community".
The premiere also said the government had drawn up several plans to ensure transparency in the election process and encourage citizens to practice their rights in selecting their representatives.
The President finally ended his speech by highlighting the importance of the Independence Day and achievements realised in Jordan over the past 64 years.
The country won its full independence and was declared a Kingdom on May 25, 1946 following the end of the British mandate.
All ministries, public institutions and banks observed yesterday (25.05.10) as a holiday to mark the occasion.
