Prince Charles encourages organic farming
May 25, 2010, 12:02 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles has blasted the "billions" of pounds worth of wasted food every year.
The prince made a speech encouraging the use of organic farming as an alternative to the waste crisis on a visit to the Organic Research Centre, near Newbury in Berkshire yesterday (24.05.10).
He told gathered guests, who included the centre's staff, trustees and partners: "Don't believe the nonsense that people say 'we can't feed the world on an organic basis' - it is absolute nonsense I think."
"Just ask them the next time you hear this endless argument: 'How much waste has there been in the world of all the food we're supposed to be eating?'"
The prince, whose own 11,000-acre arable and dairy farm has worked under organic principles since 1985, went on to question the system which has led to so much food being wasted year on year.
He said: "In this country we waste 10 billion quid's worth of food every year - wasted. Is that really a sensible system? At the end of the day, I don't think so."
The heir to the throne was invited to speak at the Organic Research Centre to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its opening.
