Queen Elizabeth opens cathedral
May 5, 2010, 12:03 GMT
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh opened a £12.5 million extension to Norwich Cathedral yesterday (04.05.10).
Hundreds of people turned out to see the royal couple open the new facilities at the cathedral - which includes an education centre, refectory and library - in the city centre.
The refurbishment - which took over a decade and was aided by £2.3 million of money from a Lotto grant - is the most extensive work to the cathedral since it was built over 900 years ago.
The queen and Prince Philip arrived by helicopter at the Norwich School, where they were greeted by junior students.
Senior teacher Nicola Hill said: "It's really exciting for the whole school to be involved. We are very lucky. It's also a great honour for the cathedral and for the city."
The couple were then driven to the cathedral in the royal Bentley to the sound of bells pealing.
They later attended a service of thanksgiving to mark the formal opening of the buildings and met with workers and church volunteers.
