Dutch Queen Beatrix honours victims in assassination attempt
Apr 29, 2010, 16:46 GMT
Amsterdam - Dutch Queen Beatrix on Thursday paid tribute to the people killed in an attack aimed at her and members of the royal family a year ago.
Amid massive police protection, Beatrix unveiled a monument in the town of Apeldoorn in memory of the seven people killed in the attack on April 30, 2009 when a man drove his vehicle into a procession, aiming at the bus in which the royal family were riding.
Ten other people were injured in the attack carried out by a 38- year-old man who himself suffered serious skull injuries when he crashed his car and died soon after. The motive for his action was never determined.
Also participating in the Apeldoorn ceremonies was Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife, Princess Maxima.
The monument unveiling ceremony came on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Beatrix, 72, ascending to the throne.
Massive security arrangements were being put in place in Amsterdam for Friday's public festivities marking the anniversary. Some 1,000 security personnel were being put on duty for the occasion.
