Princess Madeleine splits with fiance

Sweden's Princess Madeleine has split with her fiance Jonas Bergstrom.

The 27-year-old royal called off her relationship with the lawyer following revelations from a student who claims to have slept with him, but insisted she didn't know he was engaged to the princess.

Tora Uppstrom Berg - who studies photography at Arts University College, Bournemouth, South West England - told the Daily Mail newspaper: "I had an affair with Madeleine's fiance. We were intimate. He followed me home in a taxi at 4 o'clock in the morning.

"Had I known, I would never do anything like this. I feel sorry for Madeleine for having an unfaithful man. She deserves better."

Sweden's royal palace refused to officially confirm the allegations until Saturday (24.04.10) when it said the pair had parted.

A statement read: "They have decided that the best for them is to go their separate ways."

The same day, Princess Madeleine was seen boarding a plane to New York.

The Swedish royal family has seen a number of scandals in recent months, including Madeleine's brother Prince Carl Philip dating bikini model Sofia Hellqvist.

A royal source said: "He comes across as the black sheep of the family. Now that he is no longer next in line to the throne he does his own thing.

"He's a racing car driver and a bit of a wild child. But he also designs his own range of cutlery and he's studying at an agricultural college in southern Sweden."
