Prince William's North Wales posting
Apr 16, 2010, 12:02 GMT
Britain's Prince William will be posted to North Wales when he qualifies as a pilot later this year.
The second-in-line to the British throne will move to RAF Valley in Anglesey for three years following his qualification, which allows him to be pilot a search and rescue helicopter.
William had been expected to apply to be at an English base to be close to his girlfriend Kate Middleton, but a spokesperson for St James's Palace has confirmed he is Wales-bound.
Anglesey is one of the remotest spots of the UK, and is well known for its rugged terrain and hostile weather and was chosen to help William develop his skills.
The prince's first role will be as the helicopter co-pilot.
His royal status is not a guarantee of instant promotion to captain - which will be based on his performance on the job.
The prince will be following in the footsteps of his father, the Prince of Wales, who flew helicopters in the Royal Navy, as well as his uncle the Duke of York, who was a Sea King helicopter pilot during the Falklands War.
