Prince Charles mourns
Apr 15, 2010, 12:02 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles will attend the funeral of Poland's president.
The Prince of Wales is set to join global leaders in Krakow, Poland, as they mourn for president Lech Kaczynski at his funeral this Sunday (18.04.10), but he won't be joined by wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall as she is still recovering from a broken left leg.
The president - who died alongside his wife Maria and 94 other people in a plane crash in western Russia on April 10 - will be buried in a crypt in Krakow's Wawel Cathedral, a place which has commonly been reserved for the country's kings.
Charles and Camilla only recently returned from a three-day trip to the country, where they had stayed as guests of the president and his wife.
Clarence House immediately released a statement upon hearing the news and said the royal couple were "shocked and deeply upset".
The duchess will instead sign a book of condolence in the Polish community's cultural centre in Hammersmith, west London, tomorrow (16.04.10).
Those expected to attend the official funeral also include US leader Barack Obama, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and German chancellor Angela Merkel.
