Prince Philip inspired

Apr 14, 2010, 12:02 GMT

Britain's Prince Philip has met with an "inspirational case study" for his Duke of Edinburgh award.

The royal greeted Prof. Colin Evans at the Palace of St James where he congratulated him and gave him a tour of the royal apartments there.

Colin - a freelance diplomat and former Royal Marine - said events echoed his meeting with the prince in 1981 when he was awarded his Duke of Edinburgh gold award at Buckingham palace.

He said: "The duke was witty and cheerful and exactly as I remember him."

After the meeting, Colin gave a speech to other Gold Award recipients and their families who had been invited and congratulated them on behalf of the prince.

He also described the awards scheme - in which those seeking to gain it have to complete a trek and a series of tasks to improve themselves personally in both a mental and physical capacity - as a "Certificate of Good Citizenship".

Colin's links to the palace run deep, with him having served alongside Prince Philip's youngest son, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, in the elite Royal Marines.

As a military man Colin was also once an Honour Guard Subaltern to Queen Elizabeth II.
