Princess Anne opens a school
Mar 26, 2010, 13:02 GMT
Britain's Princess Anne has opened a £86 million college campus in the southern English county of Kent.
The princess toured the MidKent College buildings in Medway Road, Gillingham, then met with staff and students at the hospital, before unveiling a commemorative plaque.
The Princess told the BBC: "I'm always delighted to see this level of investment in colleges which are as close as possible to those who really need it.
"I'm sure the students will respond in kind by filling the classes for years to come, so my congratulations to everybody involved."
Princess Anne was then shown the engineering department, where students are helping in the restoration work of the Medway Queen paddle steamer, which was famed for helping to rescue 7,000 servicemen during the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II.
The royal took a real interest in the students' work and spent twice as long as she was allocated to talk to the students of the college and their tutors.
She also toured the college's health and beauty salons, before being shown a dance recital in the college's purpose-built theatre.
