A flagship store of Britain's Queen Elizabeth's silversmith was robbed yesterday (09.03.10).
The jewellers, Mappin and Webb, in London's West End - which holds two royal warrants and acts as silversmith to the monarch and her son Prince Charles - was robbed at midday by a gang of robbers on motorcycles who stole a number of expensive items.
Witnesses told police that several men on bikes raced up to the shop, which is by Old Bond Street and Piccadilly, and smashed windows with heavy tools before escaping.
Jewellery was taken from the window displays, though it is not yet known exactly what or how much was stolen, and the area has been cordoned off while officers examine the scene.
A police spokesman told the BBC: "A number of suspects on motorcycles approached the shop and smashed windows before stealing items. Westminster CID are investigating. There have been no arrests and inquiries continue."
There was no-one at Mappin and Webb available to comment on the break-in.
