Sweden's Daniel Westling had a kidney transplant yesterday (27.05.09).
The fiancé of Crown Princess Victoria had the complicated surgery at Karolinska Hospital in Solna, Stockholm.
His father Olle Westling was the donor.
Daniel - who fell in love with Victoria while he was her fitness trainer - was not previously known to have kidney problems and the surgery was not announced in advance.
Palace officials claim Daniel suffered from a congenital disorder which led to impaired kidney function but insist it is not a hereditary disease that could be passed on to his future children.
Father and son are reportedly recovering well.
Royal spokeswoman Nina Eldh told Swedish news agency TT: "Daniel Westling has today undergone a kidney transplant at Karolinska Hospital and he is doing very well. Olle Westling is also feeling well following the removal of his kidney."
Victoria didn't visit Daniel in hospital. She is currently on an official visit to Greenland and will not return until June 6.
Eldh said the couple - who are due to marry on June 19 next year - had discussed the surgery and decided Victoria should keep her appointment with Greenland.
