Britain's Prince Harry will fund his first foreign tour himself.
Unlike other members of the royal family, the 24-year-old prince will save the country thousands of pounds by paying for a VIP dinner he is hosting in New York.
Queen Elizabeth - his grandmother - will pick up the bill for Harry and four others to fly to America. They will travel in business class in a scheduled British Airways flight.
While in the US, Harry will attend private appointments for his Sentabale charity as well as performing official duties.
Because the visit is a mix of personal and public business, it has not been sanctioned by the foreign office and must be financed privately.
The prince's private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton told Britain's The Daily Mail newspaper: "It's just Harry's way. As it's not a full-fat royal trip, the Queen has very graciously offered to foot the bill, which is very kind of her."
Harry - who is expected to play in a charity polo match and visit Ground Zero during his 36 hours in New York - was keen to stress he will not spend his time abroad partying.
His secretary added: "Quite frankly I think he will be cream-crackered and will want a good night's kip."
Harry's father Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall cost taxpayers £330,000 when they flew a private jet to the Big Apple in 2005.
Last year, Charles' brother Prince Andrew spent £118,440 hiring a plane to travel across the US.
