Britain's Zara Phillips retired early from the Badminton Horse Trials.
The rider - who is the daughter of keen showjumper Princess Anne - suffered a fall from her horse Toytown on Saturday (09.05.09) and an injury to her other mount Ardfield Magic Star earlier in the day, resulting in her withdrawing from the competition on day two.
Speaking afterwards, Zara said: "These things happen - it just wasn't my day today,"
The 27-year-old royal - who withdrew from last year's Olympics following an injury to Toytown - had been optimistic about this year's Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials event and her horse's chances before the event.
She said last week: "Badminton is the pinnacle of eventing, really. Everyone wants to be here, and getting a horse here is a major thing."
"I think the cross country course is good. It's much more flowing than last year. There are not so many things where you have to jump, turn and yank the horses around too much.
There were a lot of tired horses last year - the course took its toll. The ground is good, which is a major bonus, but there are plenty of opportunities to make a stupid mistake as well.
"Toytown had two runs and he is very happy with himself. We will take each step as it comes."
Although she has never left the competition as victor, Zara's father, Captain Mark Phillips, won Badminton four times between 1971 and 1981.
