Camilla's medal presentation

Jul 15, 2008, 11:15 GMT

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, presented medals to four soldiers who recently returned from serving in Iraq yesterday (14.0.08).

Camilla, the wife of Britain's Prince Charles, wore a combat jacket as she visited Wiltshire's 4th Battalion The Rifles where she watched a training exercise before presenting the medals and meeting the soldiers and their families.

The 60-year-old royal then joined soldiers in a 15-ton Bulldog armoured personnel carrier for a ride around the Bulford Camp.

Following the adrenaline-packed outing, Camilla said to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "Seeing the men in action was a real privilege. I couldn't believe how fast we were going. And as for that personnel carrier - I thoroughly recommend it. A real adrenaline rush!"

Camilla attended the camp in her role as Royal Colonel of the 4th Battalion The Rifles - a position she accepted in 2006 - which requires her to meet personnel, receive regular briefings from the Commanding Officer and write letters to bereaved families and injured servicemen.

The Duchess of Cornwall's current visit to her soldiers in Bulford puts me very much in mind of the stirring speech she delivered in December to this enormously brave 4th Battalion The Rifles on their return, less five fallen comrades, from Basra, Iraq, in late 2007. 'I am proud of you, and proud to be British' -- these are some of the words The Duchess spoke then, and all to great effect upon soldiers who needed very badly to hear them, and it seems to me that so should we all be this: proud of these incredibly fine soliders, who operated in the most hellish conditions known abroad, and proud of their Royal Colonel, who has, in the words of her own soldiers, 'bled right along with us,' as she followed their work in war so closely ... and as she quietly, steadily and loyally has written, quite movingly and quite personally, to each of The Rifles that was injured and to each family that grievously suffered the loss of a loved one to war. God bless 'em, every single one.
