Standing up for what he believes? Or what his mother told him to believe?
The 1701 Act of Settlement came into existence because some catholic subjects of the British monarchy refused to place their patriotic duty to monarch and country before the influence of the Pope. Up to the indiviual to decide whether the Queen has a greater claim on your duty and loyalty than the Pope, but you should accept the consequences of that decision.
Personally until the UK dis-establishes the Anglican Church and gives equal status to ALL religions those who are non Anglicans should not be required to pledge allegiance to the Queen as the head of her church. It's time for the Monarchy to grow up and recognize all valid religious communities as equals. Reform is badly needed in the UK it's time to divest the country from some of these outdated practices. I don't blame the young man for his refusal after all as a Catholic he is not treated as an equal.

He should be commended for standing up for what he believes. I for one did not pledge allegiance to the monarchy when I was in cubs, though my cub leader was an intelligent individual and as such did not uphold the requirement to pledge allegiance to a religion or a monarchy
