Anne's Antarctica visit
Jan 18, 2007, 13:20 GMT
Britain's Princess Anne has made a historic visit to Antarctica.
Anne - who is travelling with her husband, Rear Admiral Timothy Lawrence - has become the first royal to visit the southernmost continent in more than 50 years.
The aim of the royal eight-day visit is to see at first hand the work of British scientists, as well as visit a US scientific station and a Ukrainian research base.
The Princess Royal - who is the patron of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust - will also be paying a visit to some of Britain's historical sites in the British Antarctic Territory.
These include the former British base at Port Lockroy - the only historic site in Antarctica to be operated as a living museum.
From Antarctica, the royal couple - who arrived in the continent on Sunday (14.01.07) - will head on to Chile for a "good-will" visit to meet the country's president Michelle Bachelet Jeria.
