Princess Anne's Antarctica trip
Dec 29, 2006, 14:20 GMT
Britain's Princess Anne is set to travel to Antarctica.
Anne will become the first British royal to visit the continent next
month as she travels to the island of South Georgia.
The 56-year-old princess will be visiting a British base on the island
and join the survey ship HMS Endurance
The HMS Endurance is the only Royal Navy vessel in the Antarctic. The
crew are on a nine-month mission for the British Antarctic Survey which
involves collecting data on global warming.
HMS Endurance is named after the British explorer Sir Ernest
Shackleton's ship.
During his most famous expedition, Shackleton's ship became trapped in ice in the Weddell Sea, off Antarctica, during the 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
