Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, attempted to appease British war veterans by wearing a Remembrance Day poppy during her royal tour of Pakistan yesterday (01.11.06).
Camilla was accused of insulting the memory of British servicemen after removing the flower pin earlier this week, claiming it kept catching on her Islamic-style dupatta scarf.
The duchess appeared to have taken heed of the criticism and proudly wore a poppy on her evening gown as she attended a banquet held by Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf in the capital Islamabad.
The poppy is worn in memory of British soldiers who lost their lives in battle, ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11.
A royal aide told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "She is wearing a poppy today because it's November 1. She never wears a poppy before November 1."
Earlier this week, British war veterans said they felt her excuse that the plastic emblem was catching on her scarf was insulting to the memory of British soldiers who died fighting for their country.
They also pointed out that removing the symbolic poppy also offended the 400,000 Muslim soldiers of the British Indian Army who fought in the Second World War and thousands more who fought for Britain in the First World War and other conflicts.
John Clarke, an 83-year-old Royal British Legion branch vice-president, said he was "absolutely disgusted" by the duchess's actions.
