Britain's Prince Charles gave his support to National Poetry Day yesterday (05.10.06) by reading a poem on the radio.
A pre-recorded reading by the prince of Robert Byron's poem 'All These Things I Learnt' was aired on the BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme yesterday morning.
The prince personally chose the poem as his contribution to the annual day - this year themed identity - which aims to encourage people to appreciate poetry.
'All These Things I Learnt' describes a love of the natural world and the passing on of this knowledge from father to son.
A Clarence House spokesman said: "The poem reflects the beauty of the British countryside and it's something that resonates with His Royal Highness."
Charles has always been a keen gardener and a great admirer of rural Britain. He encourages the production of organic produce and heads the charity The Prince of Wales's Business & The Environment Programme, which promotes the preservation of the environment in industry.
Founder of National Poetry Day, William Sieghart, said he was "delighted" that the prince decided to mark the day with a personal reading.
He added: "He joins people up and down the country who are celebrating the richness of our poetic heritage."
