Camilla's state pension
Sep 7, 2006, 15:45 GMT
The wife of Britain's Prince Charles may receive a £30,000 state pension when her husband dies.
A family law expert has discovered that as the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla would be added to the Civil List should Charles die before the ruling monarch, his mother Queen Elizabeth.
Camilla received her title because, as the second wife of the prince, it was felt she should not inherit the name Queen Consort when Charles became king, and would be known as Princess Consort instead.
The title of Duchess of Cornwall was first used as a solution for Caroline of Brunswick, when she became estranged from King George IV.
The court refused to introduce legislation enabling the king to divorce Caroline, and suggested she forgo the legal right and privileges of a queen and take on the new title as an alternative.
The Civil List provides the Duke of Cornwall's widow with £30,000 of taxpayers’ money, annually.
