Princess Mary's solidarity visit
Sep 1, 2006, 13:48 GMT
Denmark's Princess Mary visited school children in the country's best-known immigrant neighbourhood this week, to show solidarity.
The Australian-born royal visited the suburb of Vollsmose, in Denmark's third largest city Odense, to meet with immigrant residents, and was welcomed by flag-waving youngsters.
Mayor Jan Boye escorted the 34-year-old princess around the town and the jubilant school children also presented her with a handmade cardboard crown.
After the tour, the princess was invited to lunch with a family of Palestinian refugees at their home on the sixth floor of a housing block.
Kalil Jomaa and his wife Jawaher Othman, who arrived in Scandinavia 16 years ago, prepared a Middle Eastern feast of kebabs, falafel and humus.
Following the meal the princess chatted with the couple's seven children.
Mary visited the area two years ago with husband Prince Frederik. She reportedly requested the return visit because she wanted to meet residents in a less formal manner.
