William to be rugby patron
Aug 31, 2006, 22:30 GMT
Britain's Prince William is to become the Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).
The 24-year-old prince will support his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, in her role as royal patron from next February, for the 2007 RBS Six Nations Championships.
He said he was 'honoured' to take up the position, and added: 'Rugby is such a central part of Welsh life and I hope to be able to contribute in some way to the development of the sport, both at the community level and on the international stage.' Last year, William met a number of the players when he accompanied the British and Irish Lions rugby squad on their tour of New Zealand. He said: 'I am also looking forward to renewing my friendships with all the Welsh players whom I met on the Lions tour to New Zealand.' David Pickering, Chairman of the WRU, said: 'The prince's passion for and commitment to the game is well known, and I am sure he will prove inspirational in his new role within Welsh rugby. We are thrilled.' This will be the fourth public role for the prince, who is already President of the English Football Association and patron of the homelessness charity Centrepoint and the conservation organisation The Tusk Trust.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
