Queen's archaeological dig
Aug 21, 2006, 14:54 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth has invited a team of TV archaeologists to dig up her royal grounds.
To celebrate the monarch's 80th birthday Channel 4's 'Time Team' will set up camp at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Holyroodhouse for a four-day live dig between August 25-28.
Presenter Tony Robinson revealed all the royal family are looking forward to the programme.
He told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: 'The funny thing about it is that the archetypal Time Team would be going into the back garden of someone's terrace house in Northampton and the people always get really excited about what's under their garden. Well, this is exactly the same. They all seem very excited. 'Charles, who knows a thing or two about archaeology, was very interested in the methodology. 'The queen, well, she is just intrigued. They are really curious to know what's under all the little bumps and lumps. They were all extraordinary relaxed about the prospect of their gardens being dug up.' The archaeologist team will look in the Buckingham Palace gardens for evidence of a Roundhead garrison built to keep the king's forces out. They also hope to discover a canal built by Duke of Buckingham in 1703. At Windsor Castle they aim to find remains of a building erected by Edward III in 1348 to house the Round Table for his knights. The queen will be on her summer break at Balmoral during the dig.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
