Princess Diana's car found in compound
Aug 15, 2006, 14:37 GMT
The car in which Britain's late Princess Diana was killed has been found abandoned in a London car pound.
The black Mercedes has reportedly been left to rust in a police compound for lost and stolen vehicles, since it was shipped back from France a year ago.
The car - which was carrying the princess and her lover Dodi al Fayed when it crashed in a Paris tunnel in 1997 - was brought to Britain to be examined for an inquiry into Diana's death. A police spokesman told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: 'It's a very sad end to a tragic story and the officers involved have found it difficult to see the car just lying there rusting away. 'A number of traffic officers from the area have been seconded to Lord Stevens' inquiry, so everyone is aware of the significance of the Mercedes. 'It's amazing to think that dozens of people go shopping just over the road all the time and have no idea that the car in which the princess died is just a short walk away.' The investigation concluded the vehicle had not been tampered with but contained other crucial evidence. Lord Stevens, the head of the inquiry, said last month: 'The car still contains substantial amounts of dried blood from which, with leading-edge technology, we have the opportunity to gain valuable information.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
