Mirren defends The Queen
Aug 10, 2006, 14:21 GMT
Actress Helen Mirren has denied taking a 'cheap shot' at Britain's Queen Elizabeth in her latest film.
The British actress - who stars as the monarch in 'The Queen' - hit out at critics who claim that one scene, in which she is woken by a maid to be told about the death of Princess Diana, is disrespectful.
The actress told USA Today: 'I'm in curlers with a hot water bottle. 'Details of her private life are exposed, but the film is not a cheap shot or sensationalised.' The film - directed by Stephen Frears - focuses on the events following the tragic death of Diana, who was killed in a Parisian car crash in 1997. Last year Helen starred as Elizabeth I in a British television series, and she revealed she was 'fascinated' to play both roles and pointed out the strong character differences between the monarchs. She said: 'They are completely different. Elizabeth I was a dictator who could do whatever she wanted. She had the power. Elizabeth II, of course, absolutely doesn't.' The 61-year-old actress also confessed she was surprised by the simple costumes she had to were when playing Elizabeth II. She said: 'After playing Elizabeth I, I was used to jewels and beautiful fabrics. 'When I went for a costume fitting for 'The Queen', however, there were all these brogue shoes lined up, and tweed skirts. She is utterly without vanity.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
