Princes join Navy
Aug 9, 2006, 14:57 GMT
Britain's Princes William and Harry have joined the Navy - along with their stepmother the Duchess of York.
The young princes have been appointed to senior ranks of Commodore-in-Chief - despite still serving in the army.
William, 24, has been officially made patron of the Navy in Scotland and of submarines, and his younger brother Harry holds the same authority over small ships and diving. The ceremonial appointments are expected to raise smiles at Sandhurst Military Academy, where William is currently training and at Harry's army base Bovington, in Dorset. A source was quoted in Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper as saying: 'The boys will probably get a bit of ribbing from the Army. 'It just goes to show it's still who you know, not what you know.' Meanwhile, Prince Charles' wife Camilla has been made Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Medical Services. The duchess' appointment to the Navy is seen as Queen Elizabeth's final approval of her as a legitimate member of the royal family. The appointment is expected to increase Camilla's public duties. Her alleged reluctance to get involved in royal business is said to have previously angered her husband Charles.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
