William's sergeant sacked
Aug 8, 2006, 13:59 GMT
A regimental sergeant major who trained Britain's Princes William and Harry has been sacked following bullying claims.
RSM Dean Hammond - dubbed Osama bin Hammond for his threatening behaviour - was removed from his post at Sandhurst Military Academy after senior officers received a stream of complaints from cadets.
Recruits at New College regiment - where Prince Harry was trained and William is currently undergoing his officer training - claimed Hammond subjected them to intolerable verbal abuse. Hammond was finally suspended after he lost his temper and stomped on a cadet's boots - because they were not shiny enough. A source told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: 'These regimental sergeant majors are trusted implicitly because they are in charge of shaping future soldiers. For him to have shown a loss of temper like that is really not on.' During his training, Prince Harry was reportedly terrified of the 6ft 2in sergeant. A source said: 'Everyone was terrified of RSM Hammond. 'Like the rest of us, Prince Harry called him the Herminator, after the Arnold Schwarzenegger character.' Britain's Ministry of Defence has condemned Hammond's draconic training technique. A spokesman said: 'There is a difference between robust training and overstepping the mark. When the line is crossed we act. 'We will not tolerate any bullying.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
