Britain's Prince Charles unveiled a memorial for the Queen Mother yesterday (06.08.06).
The Prince of Wales paid tribute to his late grandmother by uncovering a carved slate plaque near her old summer residence, the Castle of May.
The plaque - created by sculptor Adam Williamson - features an image of the Queen Mother and a moving inscription by Charles, which reads: 'Placed here by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, in loving memory of his grandmother, HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who kept such a special place in her heart for this parish and who worshipped in this kirk for almost 50 years until October 2001.'
Charles was accompanied by his wife, Camilla, as he joined worshippers at Canisbay Church, in Caithness, Scotland, for the official ceremony.
It took Williamson 18 months to complete the memorial.
During the creation process, he met with Charles several times and studied the royal family's photo albums to ensure the portrait on the plaque bore maximum resemblance to the Queen Mother.
At the opening ceremony, the sculptor saluted Charles' personal commitment to the project.
He said: 'He was very involved in the whole process, much more so than my other projects. He had a very firm idea of what he wanted and you could tell it meant a great deal.'
