Charles' gardening apprentice
Jul 31, 2006, 13:02 GMT
Britain's Prince Charles has launched a nation-wide search for an organic gardening apprentice.
In a variation of the popular TV show 'The Apprentice', the heir to the throne is looking for a talented candidate to learn the basics of the trade.
In 'The Apprentice' business tycoon Sir Alan Sugar chooses the most talented trainee to work for one of his companies. In Charles' version, the successful horticulturalist will win a chance to work in royal gardens, once owned by the Queen Mother. The competition is open all young people across the UK. The advert calls for a 'school-leaver or underprivileged person' interested in becoming an apprentice gardener. The lucky winner will spend a year with the head gardener of picturesque gardens of Castle of Mey, learning about organic farming techniques. At the end of the training period, the apprentice will win a place in horticultural college. During her lifetime, the Queen Mother expressed great interest in the gardens. Most flowers in the gardens, which include her favourite Albertine roses, are timed to bloom in August, when the late royal used to make her annual trip to the castle.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
