Elizabeth's shopkeeper chauffeur
Jul 26, 2006, 15:10 GMT
A shopkeeper unexpectedly became a chauffeur for Britain's Queen Elizabeth during a royal visit to the Western Isles.
Russell Town was shocked when Princess Anne came into his Hebridean shop and asked: 'Do you know where Her Majesty could get a taxi?'
The queen wanted to visit the famous Achamore Gardens but had no transport to take her on the ten-mile round trip. Town told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: 'Princess Anne and her son Peter arrived on bikes. 'They introduced themselves and said the queen was interested in seeing the gardens and would it be possible to arrange a lift for her.' Town offered to drive the monarch around in his people-carrier, after the royal family stopped off at the island of Gigha on Sunday (23.07.06) - at the appropriately named Queen's Beach. He added: 'I was in my car with Queen Elizabeth II in the passenger seat next to me. It was surreal.' Town revealed the Queen was a 'proper chatterbox' and knowledgeable about the island which was purchased by residents for £4 million in 2002. He said: 'She asked about how things were going since the buy-out. 'When she arrived she shook our hands and thanked us for taking her. When we dropped her off she made a point of thanking us again.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
