Queen Elizabeth's model figure
Jul 24, 2006, 14:12 GMT
Britain's Queen Elizabeth had a model figure in her 20s, a new exhibition has revealed.
An exhibition of 80 evening gowns worn by the monarch is to go on display at Buckingham Palace to mark the queen's 80th birthday.
Some of the dresses she wore in her 20s reveal that Elizabeth had an enviable figure known as a 'handspan' waist. Each of the gowns in the exhibition are displayed on mannequins made to the exact measurement of the queen at the time she wore them. One black satin and velvet gown, designed by Norman Hartnell in the late 1940s, is described by fashion director Hilary Alexander as 'model-perfect in its silhouette and would not look out of place on an haute couture catwalk today'. The exhibition marks the official summer opening of Buckingham Palace and is the largest ever display of the queen's public and private wardrobe. Dresses are arranged in colour groups and some jewellery will also be on display, including a brooch designed by Prince Phillip as a gift to his wife on their fifth wedding anniversary in 1952.Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
