Duke of Edinburgh hosts Awards party
Jul 14, 2006, 13:33 GMT
Britain's Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, hosted a party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards yesterday (13.07.06).
Philip - who is married to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II - launched the awards scheme over half a decade ago.
The initiative - aimed to recognise achievements of young adults from all backgrounds - has involved more than 3 million people so far. The star-studded guest list included Buzz Aldrin - a moon landing astronaut - and Roger Bannister - the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes. Among the 8000 guests - gathered on the lawn of Buckingham Palace - were film director Tim Burton and his actress wife, Helena Bonham-Cater, as well as actor sir David Jason. According to 24dash.com, Sir Henry Cooper and explorer David Hempleman-Adams were also present. Hempleman-Adams was quoted as saying: A lot of people have asked me what's the hardest thing I have ever done - North Pole, South Pole, Everest? For me it's always an easy answer. It's the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. 'It was the first time I had been away from home, had to share a tent with anybody and first time I had to cook for myself. It was a scary experience and got me interested.'Copyright 2006 BANG Media International
